{"id":668,"date":"2023-07-14T11:55:21","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T11:55:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.skincancer.org\/?p=23"},"modified":"2024-03-14T19:45:38","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T19:45:38","slug":"all-skin-tones-need-sun-protection-doll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/all-skin-tones-need-sun-protection-doll\/","title":{"rendered":"All Skin Tones Need Sun Protection, Doll!","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><span class=\"TextRun SCXW104432839 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104432839 BCX0\">Over the decades, Barbie dolls have evolved (slowly, but getting there!) to reflect a broader and more diverse definition of who we are. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104432839 BCX0\">Our understanding<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104432839 BCX0\"> of how important it is to protect <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104432839 BCX0\">everyone\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104432839 BCX0\">skin from the sun <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104432839 BCX0\">has evolved, too<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW104432839 BCX0\">. But, at last, we are making progress!<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW104432839 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Barbie. <\/span><\/i>The <span data-contrast=\"auto\">blockbuster<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0movie. The doll that evokes strong memories, feelings and, yes, judgments, in all of us? Need I say more? Yes, I believe I should, because there\u2019s a story here, and it relates to your skin.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a kid, I loved my Barbie. I knew even then that I would never grow up to look like her. But I admired her confidence, posture and fabulous wardrobe, including Grace Kelly-worthy ballgowns created by my dad\u2019s cousin, Kathy. (She was a wonderful woman who, in my eyes, could have been a famous fashion designer but chose to help countless teenagers as a high-school guidance counselor.)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Anyhoo, I also loved my Barbie because she had perfect, unblemished, unfreckled skin, which never got rashes or severe, peeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/risk-factors\/sunburn\/\">sunburns<\/a>, like I did. I also noticed she had very white skin, like me \u2014 and all the other Barbies then.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, when I was a kid, it was cool to be <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tan<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, so when Mattel introduced Malibu Barbie in 1971, with her sun-kissed blonde hair and smoothly tanned skin, I thought, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wow, she looks like my older sister <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(who, of course, was way cooler than I was). Our mom tried, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/skin-cancer-prevention\/sun-protection\/sunscreen\/\">sunscreens<\/a> in those days didn\u2019t offer high SPF, water resistance or broad-spectrum protection. Hollywood icons like Farrah Fawcett and Pamela Anderson helped fuel the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/why-do-we-still-tan\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">tanning fervor <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the 1970s and \u201980s, too, which only continued to damage the skin I was in.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I wish I\u2019d known then what I know now. At the age of 25, I helped diagnose my own first skin cancer, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/skin-cancer-information\/basal-cell-carcinoma\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">basal cell carcinoma<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (BCC) on my left thigh, by pointing it out to my surgeon brother-in-law. He listened to me carefully, examined the lesion and ultimately recommended a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/you-need-a-biopsy-now-what-happens-part-1\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">biopsy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It was the first of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/a-hole-in-my-head\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">many skin cancers <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to come, thanks to my childhood sun exposure and sunburns. I got wise and started protecting my skin from the sun more diligently. Those personal experiences also led me in 2015, after a career as a health and science writer and editor, to The Skin Cancer Foundation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of my first creative projects in my new job at the Foundation was spurred by my sister alerting me to a press release, early in 2016, that Mattel was introducing Barbie dolls with a more diverse range of skin tones and body types. My first thought (besides, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They\u2019re beautiful and I want to play with them!<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) was that we could use them to remind people that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/are-people-of-color-at-risk-for-skin-cancer\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">everybody\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> skin can be at risk<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for sun damage that can lead to premature aging and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/skin-cancer-information\/\">skin cancer<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My sister charitably drove to several different stores in her suburban city to gather the dolls you see above and send them to me. (Thanks for the donation, Lisa!) When they arrived at our office, I showed them to my colleagues, who agreed these more diverse Barbies were a good conversation starter to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/teach-your-kids-about-sun-protection\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">talk to kids<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> about why it\u2019s so important to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/skin-cancer-prevention\/sun-protection\/\">protect their skin<\/a> from the sun.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7497\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7497\" class=\"wp-image-7497\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shot-2-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shot-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shot-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shot-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shot-2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shot-2-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Shot-2-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7497\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barbie BFFs look out for each other: \u201cTime to reapply our sunscreen and put our hats back on!\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before my colleague Paul and I could take the dolls to the park for the photos you see here, though, I hunted for sun-protective gear for them, especially hats. Guess what? Not so easy to find. I had to turn to eBay to locate some vintage straw Barbie hats from the 1970s, and then to Etsy for handmade ones. (Mattel, are you listening?)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We decided we should update this cute post to remind everyone about the importance of daily sun protection to keep your skin looking and feeling its best \u2014 <\/span><span aria-label=\"Rich text content control\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200b<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at a time when Barbie may have even more to contribute. Tell your kids that wearing sunscreen and a hat is smart and stylish. It will help keep their skin looking young and fresh \u2014 like Barbie! And it can also help them avoid hyperpigmentation, freckles, dark spots, tanning and sunburns, which can lead to skin cancer later. Believe me, I know.
