May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month<\/a>, a time when we join the medical community, beauty industries and the media to educate people about the prevention<\/a>, early detection<\/a> and prompt treatment<\/a> of skin cancer. It\u2019s a big job: The reach of this disease is immense, with millions of people diagnosed each year in the United States alone. And while taking on the world\u2019s most common cancer may seem like an impossible feat, we\u2019re up for the challenge \u2014 but we need your help.<\/p>\n

Skin cancer<\/a> can be prevented with some behavior changes. Adopting a complete sun protection strategy<\/a> can drastically reduce skin cancer risk. Unfortunately, some people think that they don\u2019t need to worry about sun protection<\/a>. For them, the desire to look tan<\/a> is more compelling than the potential for developing skin cancer. Others think skin cancer does not happen to people with darker skin<\/a> tones. And, many seniors discount the need for a daily sun protection strategy, reasoning that the \u201cdamage has already been done.\u201d<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the thing: Sun damage is cumulative<\/a>. Whether you\u2019re 16 or 60, without sun protection, you\u2019re leaving your skin exposed to the harmful effects of the sun\u2019s rays. That\u2019s why The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that all people, regardless of age or skin tone, practice sun-safe behavior<\/a>s. This month, we hope you\u2019ll join us in reminding your loved ones that it\u2019s never too early or too late<\/em> to embrace a sun-safe lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Throughout the year, we share sun protection tips for every age. We also feature stories of individuals<\/a> who have been diagnosed with skin cancer. Their experiences are powerful reminders of the reach of this disease, not only shaping the lives of the patients but also of their loved ones.<\/p>\n
