But that\u2019s exactly what happened to Dorothy Overstreet in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, she wants to educate people about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/skin-cancer-information\/rare-skin-cancers\/#alm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and how to detect it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dorothy, who was 76 at the time, was getting a corn removed when her podiatrist noticed a dark patch of skin on her left heel.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMy doctor said, \u2018<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What\u2019s that?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Do you mind if I biopsy it?\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She was shocked to hear that he suspected a melanoma. \u201cI told him, \u2018But my foot\u2019s not in the sun and my skin is not light.\u2019\u201d Dorothy explained. \u201cThat\u2019s when I realized that anyone can get skin cancer.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Eight days later, her doctor delivered the news: Dorothy had acral lentiginous melanoma and needed immediate surgery. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In an instant, her life took a new and frightening turn. Dorothy took the rest of the day off to process the news. &#8220;I never heard of melanoma on the foot. Then I researched and read about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/bob-marley-should-not-have-died-from-melanoma\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bob Marley<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following her podiatrist\u2019s orders, Dorothy booked a consultation with a dermatologist and a plastic surgeon.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">About ALM<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ALM is the most common melanoma found in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/skin-cancer-information\/skin-cancer-skin-of-color\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">people of color<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It often appears as a black or brown discoloration on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet or under the nails. If left untreated, it can grow and spread to other parts of the body. Recognizing the early warning signs can make the difference between life and death.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> For people of color, ALM and other skin cancers are often diagnosed later, when it becomes more challenging to treat. This delay in diagnosis is attributed in part to a lower public awareness of the risk of skin cancer among people of color. And because the chances of skin cancer are smaller in patients of color, there\u2019s often a lower index of suspicion among health care providers. And third, the places on the body where skin cancers tend to occur in people of color are often in less sun-exposed areas, making detection more difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Flap Surgery and Reconstruction<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dorothy got some good news before her surgery: the pathology report showed that the melanoma had not spread beyond the original tumor site, and her lymph nodes were clean.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At her consultation, the doctors explained that after\u202fthe melanoma was removed, Dorothy would undergo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/blog\/what-is-the-flap-technique-in-skin-cancer-surgery\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">flap surgery<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> so that she would be able to walk again. While physicians commonly use wide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/treatment-resources\/treatment-glossary\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">excisional surgery<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fto remove acral melanoma, the location and size of Dorothy\u2019s tumor required flap surgery to fully reconstruct the site using surrounding tissue.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI brought a notebook and drew pictures of what the doctors were explaining to me,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I put my trust in these doctors.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nine days later, Dorothy had a three-hour operation. She had to stay in bed or on the sofa with her foot elevated. Thankfully, her daughter, a nurse, took time off to change her dressings each day for the first two weeks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recovery was a long, difficult journey. Three months of being immobilized, alongside the isolation and fear associated with the pandemic took its toll on Dorothy\u2019s mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt was a frightening experience. I had anxiety, depression, PTSD and paranoia,\u201d she explained. \u201cI thought, \u2018<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Am I ever going to walk again? How am I going to stand up?<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 I was alarmed about every strange mark on my body.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cFinally, I said, \u2018Okay, Dorothy, you&#8217;ve got to control this cancer, the cancer is not going to control you.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With time and healing, Dorothy became accustomed to her new normal as a melanoma survivor. She resumed working remotely. An occupational therapist taught her how to walk and safely perform daily tasks. She began walking on her toes, then gradually put pressure on her foot. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Educating People About the Dangers of Acral Melanoma<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8489 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Medical-staff-setting-up-for-free-skin-cancer-screening-at-Dorothys-event-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Medical-staff-setting-up-for-free-skin-cancer-screening-at-Dorothys-event-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Medical-staff-setting-up-for-free-skin-cancer-screening-at-Dorothys-event-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Medical-staff-setting-up-for-free-skin-cancer-screening-at-Dorothys-event-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Medical-staff-setting-up-for-free-skin-cancer-screening-at-Dorothys-event-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Medical-staff-setting-up-for-free-skin-cancer-screening-at-Dorothys-event.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/>While she was housebound, Dorothy considered writing a memoir about her experience. Then she decided to do something better: <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">talk to people<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to educate them about acral melanoma and how to detect it. She was surprised at the lack of awareness about the disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEvery time I talked to someone about skin cancer on my foot, they\u2019d look at me with their mouths open and say, \u2018I\u2019ve never heard such a thing,\u2019\u201d Dorothy explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dorothy is also calling upon doctors to have representative photos in their offices. \u201cWhere are the pictures of cancer on black and brown skin in the doctor&#8217;s\u202foffice? I&#8217;d like to see some pictures, so people can understand what it looks like.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dorothy held an awareness event at her church in June 2024. About 60 people attended, including dermatologists from the local hospital. Dorothy shared her story, the dermatologists performed free skin cancer screenings and held a skin cancer Q&amp;A. Educational materials from The Skin Cancer Foundation were shared with participants.<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe response was overwhelming,&#8221; she said. \u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;m here to educate. I see the podiatrist every six to eight weeks, because he shaves off the scar tissue under my foot. My dentist looks in my mouth for anything unusual. My eye doctor looks in my eyes for melanoma.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dorothy performs monthly skin self-exams and checks her body for enlarged lymph nodes. She sees her dermatologist twice a year and sees her primary care physician regularly.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She works three days a week, and goes to the gym twice a week to keep the tissue in her foot alive. And Dorothy has made some style adjustments that involve protecting her skin from UV rays.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI don&#8217;t wear nail polish or get pedicures anymore, because my oncologist explained symptoms that can show up under your nail bed,\u201d she said. \u201cI&#8217;m happy keeping my fingernails fresh, so I can recognize symptoms.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dorothy believes that people should take care of their bodies and be on the alert for anything suspicious: \u201cIf you see something new, changing or unusual on your body, on your hand on your feet; go to the doctor and ask \u2018What\u2019s this?\u2019 If you can, get referred to a dermatologist.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Join the #LoveYourSkin Campaign<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To raise awareness about the dangers of skin cancer, we invite you to join our public awareness campaign \u2014 <strong>#LoveYourSkin \u2014<\/strong> focused on skin cancer education, early detection and sun protection for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/skin-cancer-information\/skin-cancer-skin-of-color\/\">skin of color<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to get involved:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skincancer.org\/get-involved\/connect-with-us\/\"><strong>Follow us<\/strong><\/a> on social media<\/li>\n<li><strong>Share<\/strong> posts, facts and graphics to help spread the word (see below for some graphics to share)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use the hashtag<\/strong> #LoveYourSkinProtectYourSkin and tag us @SkinCancerOrg so we can amplify the message<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hold an awareness event in your community.<\/strong> Dorothy distributed educational materials from The Skin Cancer Foundation.
